Half Moon Bay

The children needed an outing with Dad — so we went to Half Moon Bay.  We love coming here because it is close by and not very crowded.  Today we checked out the pier, because my friend Liz was mentioning that she recently went with her family and they had a great time fishing!  Yup, fishing off the pier — sounds fun, no?  Although we did not do it today, we will in the near future!

Many people were out — but not too crowded or overwhelming for me:

Mostly, it was fathers and sons having a great time together.  This gentleman was kind enough to fish for all the children!  Every time he pulled one out, all the children crowded around him for a chance to touch the fish and when they were all done, he handed the fish to another fisherman to take home.  He and his son were just out for pleasure — no fish for them tonight!

This is his son — he already touch the previous catch and did not want to touch another one!

This gentleman let Matthew touch his catch — his son cried when he gave it to him to hold!  It was hilarious!  He is catching these sardines to use as bait to fish larger fish off his boat

He was so excited to be holding a live fish!!!

This gentleman, however,  was fishing for his dinner — his bucket was full of these sardines!

Vince wanted to know this gentleman’s story — all dressed up and ready for fishing???  Well, he was there with his family.  They were dressed pretty casually, perhaps he just got off work? I don’t know!  Vince was a bit puzzled by his attire — so intrigued that he HAD to photograph him!

We then walked to a near by boat that just returned with its day’s catch — crabs, octopus, and shrimp.  By the time we reached them , the shrimp and octopus were sold out!

Just as the sign boasts:

Rock crabs, $2 a pound!

We walked to another nearby pier to see if anyone was crabbing off the pier with nets.

We found a young man who was fishing and crabbing.  He only caught 3 all day and had just pulled up his net when we arrived.  He handed the boys this to play with:

Ethan thought it was pretty cool.  They played with it for a bit and then Matthew picked it up and threw it back into the water — until next time!

On our way to the car, they discovered this log area… so, they jumped, climbed, got dirty.. you know the drill — and then we went home!  What a nice day with daddy!

  1. I always wanted to check out half moon bay when I was in northern cal…never had the opportunity. Looks like you guys had a fun day even though you weren’t fishing. I’m craving seafood after seeing all the fish and crabs.
